What can i ues Spearmint leaves that i have?

They're also good in lemonade, and you can make a syrup from them to use for making mint juleps. My husband's family is from Kentucky and they used to always have mint juleps in the summer.

Here's a recipe from cooks.com:

MINT JULEPS

Heat 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water to boil. Boil 5 minutes; cool. Place 2 cups fresh mint leaves in 1 quart container. Pour sugar/water mixture over mint leaves. Cover tightly and refrigerate at least 12 hours but no longer than 24 hours. For each Mint Julep fill a 12 ounce glass with crushed ice. Add 1 1/2 teaspoon mint mixture with 2 ounce bourbon. Stir with long handled spoon until frost forms on outside of glass. Serve with a long straw and a sprig of fresh mint.

I dried my leaves for winter tea-- very refreshing. You can add them to any plain tea or I just used the mint.

Does drinking spearmint tea actually help treat hirsutism in women?

and if there are ppl out there who have tried this and it worked, please tell me.

Does drinking spearmint tea actually help treat hirsutism in women?
Preliminary research has shown that drinking a couple of cups of spearmint tea every day lowered the level of free testosterone and increased the level of FSH and estrogen in the women in the study. A lot more research needs to be done before anything conclusive can come of this. In the meantime, what's the harm in having a couple of cups of spearmint tea every day?
Reply:No, it does not. There is no treatment for hirsutism. You just have to find the best way for you to remove the excess hair.

Does wild spearmint grow in Colorado? Where is it most likely to be found?

The mint commonly called spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a pretty common weedy species in Colorado, found along streams in shady places. I've seen it in ponderosa pine forests near Boulder, and evidently it grows out in plains counties as well (see map below) in ditches and along streams.

Does wild spearmint grow in Colorado? Where is it most likely to be found?
Yes, right next to the weed they grow up there.

Peppermint or spearmint chewing gum?

Peppermint is well, peppery-ier though, so if you like your foods hot and spicy, you may prefer peppermint.

(...I don't know that I'd join any group that had a strong position on one being inherently "better" than the other though...)

Reply:I like them both gum is gum. If I am purchasing myself I purchash spearmint becuse if I wanted a pepermint flavor I would just suck a pepermint
Reply:The only gum I buy is wrigley's spearmint. It has taken me a while to decide, but now its all I chew. It has the longest lasting flavor, and it is wonderful. These days I can not even eat a peppermint. I like the spearmint ones (they are they green ones). It goes as far as I do not eat candy canes. I just do not like the peppermint flavor!!

Limp Spearmint plant?

I have a small spearmint plant inside on my desk--it's very limp and leaves are becoming brown and falling off at the bottom. What's wrong and how can I fix it?

Limp Spearmint plant?
Well there could be alot of things wrong. Assuming you are not over watering or under watering... Are the roots of the plant tangled in a big mass in side the pot. Mint is a plant that likes to spread rapidly, so its root system tends to grow quickly and use up soil quickly. If this is the case trim the roots and add more dirt or transplant to a larger pot with more dirt. If this is not the problem does it get enough sun? My mint (outside) enjoys a full day of scorching prairie sun, and is growing like mad. Also have you ever fertilized it?

Oh and mint does not like to have wet roots so let it dry out before watering again.
Reply:cut it down and it should sprout back out healthy...be sure to leave a set of leaves on the bottom and it will sprout out from that....also as someone else said you might be overwatering..you do not have to throw the cut off parts away..boil some water, put the cuttings in it,swish around and let sit for apx 5 min., take the mint out and sugar it..best tea ever! Our fam. goes through gallons of it..we do not even use the storebought tea anymore :)
Reply:I've not ever known mint to be grown inside, unless you have a very sunny window or in an atrium. Here in zone 8, it needs morning sun only and afternoon shade or it will fry, and when it gets hot, needs to stay evenly moist, but not necessarily soggy. If the leaves are brown starting at the tips, you may be letting it get too dry. If they are more blackened, and if there is any black on the stem, you may be drowning the plant by over-watering or keeping too wet too long. Plants need air to the roots, too.

However, being that it is inside, my first suggestion would be to get it outside, in the shade, and check the soil for moisture. Evenly moist, like a wrung out sponge, is the best for most plants actually. Maybe you can "root" some in a vase on your desk, but I don't think it will grow inside long term without proper light. Try something like "lucky bamboo" for your desk maybe. It will grow in very low light.

The key word here is effective. Only Listerine is currently approved by the American Dental Association. The Warner-Lambert stepped forward and showed scientific evidence that satisfied the tough ADA standards. It may not taste great but it does kill bacteria and improve gingival health.

For the conspiracy people out there, Warner-Lambert does not bribe ADA officials or all the dentists in the US.

A caution regarding spearmint: In flowerbeds, it is invasive and aggressive, with an extensive, far-reaching root system. Plant it in its own bed; it will return next spring. It is very difficult to eradicate; you can pull up armloads of it and if you leave a fragment of root in the soil, it's baaaack!

I grow spearmint in several locations (in its own bed) on my property. I pull it up frequently and let it restart; I put the plants in my garbage dumpster to mask the odors. Spearmint smells so good!

I had a spearmint candy as a kid. It was a ball, not hard candy. I think my grandma got it at Kmart. Name?

The candy was sold in bags and was sort of white powdery. I think it was called air puff, or puff balls. Am I losing my mind, or does someone else remember them? They are not the candy cane striped like See's sells. They are round.

Where can i purchase fresh spearmint leaves ?

they sell it at grocery stores ususally whole leaves in a plastic box (like the one you get berries out of but flatter).

You'll probably have a better time finding them at an upscale grocery store or a whole foods store.

Where can i purchase fresh spearmint leaves ?
just buy the seed it grow fast
Reply:spearmint.com
Reply:Any garden center carries spearmint and a variety of other mints. It's probably too late to find a plant that has already been started unless you go to farmer's market, but, then again, it may be too late at a the market as well. You might be able to still find the seed which you can also find and any garden center. Mint grows rapidly so you may be able to start some now. It will die back in the winter, but will return as soon as it warms back up in the spring. Be careful though because mint is very invasive if you plant it in the ground. You may end up with mint where you don't want it. It is best to find a large container for growing mint.

Oh, if you find someone who is growing spearmint or if you find some in the produce section of a grocery store, provided it is fresh, you can take the cuttings and place them in a clear glass of water in a sunny window until they root.

Good luck

Have you tried Bath and Body Works Eucalyptus Spearmint soap?

Very nice.

Have you tried Bath and Body Works Eucalyptus Spearmint soap?
Yes, I have. I have tried all of the aromatherapy line. I actually don't like the Eucalyptus Spearmint because I have chronic migraine headaches, and spearmint, both the flavor and the aroma, bring on headaches.

I am addicted, however to the Sandalwood Rose stuff. Same line, same products, but a different scent. Absolutely wonderful...*sigh*...

Spice drops.. red is cinnamon, white is peppermint, green is spearmint, what are orange, yellow and purple?

they are like gumdrops but for the holidays..............

Spice drops.. red is cinnamon, white is peppermint, green is spearmint, what are orange, yellow and purple?
Sweet's assorted flavored spice drops come in 7 old-fashioned flavors: black licorice, cinnamon, clove, peppermint, wintergreen, orange, and pimenta.

Pimenta, which is also known as allspice, is generally yellow. Clove is often white and peppermint is purple. In your case, since peppermint is white, the purple is probably clove. Orange could be anise if it isn't orange.
Reply:i would think purple would be grape or boysenberry, yellow = lemon or banana but usually lemon, orange is... well... Orange!!I have to say though I never heard of or tasted spice drops nor have I heard of the flavor pimenta? is that a type of melon?

Anyone know how to make mint tea? spearmint?

i know how to make it but i don't know if you still can when the leaves get real small. maybe i'm not picking it right. but about july, the leaves are so small. should i make sure i get each top bud so it doesn't flower? is this natural for the leaves to be small after a few months. i'd like to hear how others make it.

Anyone know how to make mint tea? spearmint?
Take a gallon jar and loosly fill it with bruised mint. I take a hand full of stems and leaves and twist them. Add a cup of vodka, fill with water and leave it in the sun for a day just like 'sun tea'. Filter out the leaves and stems and store in the fridge. Serve over ice or heat in the microwave and float a fresh leaf on top. Hot or cold the alcohol is difficult to detect but adds depth of flavor unlike any other recipe. RScott
Reply:the size of the leaves is not important, but small leaves can be a sign of nutrient poor soil or underwatering. yeah, you want to pick off the flowering buds to keep the plant "young." and you can use those buds in your tea. as for making the tea, aficionados boil the (filtered) water, pour a bit into the tea pot to "scald" the pot, empty it out, then put a strainer full of leaves in, pour the now slightly cooler boiled water in (cooler means preserving more flavor of the leaf), and covering with a tea cozy or towel to keep the heat while steeping. for herb tea, not so important about steeping for a long time, for green or black tea, no more than 3 mins or it gets bitter.

oh, and this question does not deserve a "duh." it's a perfectly good question. ignore that person.
Reply:put mint in your tea. duh.
Reply:I have a large plant pot of chocolate peppermint that makes wonderful tea. I simply break off a sprig of it, rinse it, put it in a cup and pour boiling water over it, let it steep for a bit. Because it is picked regularly, it doesn't flower until late in the season when we leave sprigs just for that purpose. Ours tends to have smaller leaves during the hottest weather, figured it was due to needing a bit more water since, when the weather cools, the leaves tend to be bigger again.

1 tsp. spearmint in 6 oz. hot water, steeped 5-10 minutes twice a day. After about 3 weeks, I cut back to 1 cup a day. That seems to be enough unless I forget. So, my suggestion is a cup a day, plus another one every other day.

I get my spearmint from www.penderys.com because it is a lot cheaper when you have having it frequently. My family has been ordering from them since the 80s.

I inherited 14 acres of spearmint ready for harvest in Star Idaho I'm not a farmer. What to do?

I'm near Blackfoot, ID, it's already snowing here. Lucky you are on the warmer side of the state.

You need to get out your phone book, and find your nearest Ag Extension office. Go down to the Ag Extension office and explain your problem. The Ag Extension office can help direct you to local farmers growing the same type of crop.

A lot of spearmint and mint is grown in Idaho. It's a good high dollar crop. Do you have any idea where the person you inherited the land from was selling too?

It would be best, if you can get another local farmer, who is growing/harvesting the same crop to help you. This first year is going to be a serrious learning crash course for you. I think the mints are harvested more than once a year too, so you need to be ready for next spring.

Talk to a local farmer, and try to work out a deal for him to harvest and help you sell the crop, so you are not totally taken to the cleaners.

Here's a link on some of the bugs that plague the mints here in Idaho:

http://info.ag.uidaho.edu/Resources/PDFs...

Here's an article that shows what the prices have been (so you have some idea):

http://tax.idaho.gov/propertytax/PTpdfs/...

Here is a very good, but long (33 pages) article on spearmint production:

http://www.rma.usda.gov/pilots/feasible/...

As I understand it, mint production is rather controlled. They may not allow you to harvest and sell your spearmint, if you did not also inherit the rights for it. Truelly you need to talk to a farmer near the land who also grows the same crop.

Here's a copy of one of the alotment forms (not Idaho, however):

Best of luck to you, I wish I could be of more help!

Homesteading/Farming over 20 years

I inherited 14 acres of spearmint ready for harvest in Star Idaho I'm not a farmer. What to do?
Mint is growing all over the area, go ask a neighbor would be my answer if you are looking to get the crop taken care of--pretty late in the year. I just live a bit out of Star.
Reply:You need to act quickly because of the timing.

Contact some local farmers and ask them to harvest the crop on a share basis until you learn the process yourself. They will benefit from the extra crop, you will get some money from it and best of all, you will learn what is involved in spearmint farming and you can decide if you want to do it again next year or sell the property, share-crop it continuously, or have it managed by someone.
Reply:Eat it all.

Do you like tea?

Sell it on e-bay.

Seriously, if this is a serious question and not some math question for school.

Then, I say, offer to sell the property to me.
Reply:sell it to a local farmer
Reply:sell sell sell!
Reply:Lease it out to someone local
Reply:Spray Roundup on it and plant corn!
Reply:Go to a local feed store, or produce stand and ask the same question. They should know what to do and how to do it.
Reply:Can you sell it to the state?
Reply:Call the local coop in the area and tell them your situation. Tell them that you would like to hire a crop manager and for him to handle the harvest. Was it your family that planted it or was it rented out, or did they contract somebody to do each part. I bet if you talk to locals, you will find out who did it last year and who you should talk to.

Question about using spearmint tea for alternative health?

I have read that spearmint tea has been proven to reduce curb hirutism in women by controlling the release of androgens and testosterone.

I have been experiencing unexplained infertility. Have had many tests, but not the follicle stiumlating yet to determine if my hormone levels are off.

Do you think, in theory, that spearmint tea would help regulate my hormones (and cycle)?

Question about using spearmint tea for alternative health?
It would certainly be worth a try. See if you can find a naturopath or homeopathic doctor in your area. I have known many ladies who had trouble with this, and have then gone on to conceive children without the need for western medical intervention. Definitely a bonus! :) Also, check with midwives in your area, I don't know what part of the U.S. you are, but here in TX they are plentiful and full of great referrals for physicians offering alternative medical approaches. Bless you sweetie in your pursuit of having children!

Have you heard about using spearmint tea to reduce androgen levels?

I have read a bit about this theory. Supposedly drinking two cups a day can lower androgen or testosterone in women. I am wondering if this could help regulate my cycle and in turn help me to conceive? I have not been diagnosed but feel that I may have a hormone imbalance. Do you think there is any merit behind the claims?

Have you heard about using spearmint tea to reduce androgen levels?
Hi!,

Women with hirsutism grow hair on their faces, breasts and stomachs. This can cause great distress. The hair grows because they have abnormally high levels of the ‘masculinising’ androgen hormones. Androgens travel around the body in the blood stream, and a key way of treating hirsutism is to reduce the level of these androgens.

Data just published in Phytotherapy Research shows that drinking two cups of spearmint tea a day for five days could reduce the level of androgens in women with hirsutism.

In the trials the herbal tea was made by pouring a cup (250ml) of boiling water over 1 heaped teaspoon (5g) of dried leaves, and leaving it for 5 to 10 mins.

The team decided to study the effects of spearmint on hirsutism because of previous reports that extracts of the spearmint plant (Mentha spicata Labiatae) could reduce libido in men. A possible reason for this reduced libido could have been that spearmint was reducing their androgen level. Other research had shown that these extracts reduced androgen levels in rats.

Reply:Yes, it could be a very real problem. Mint is pratically a weed. It grows out of control and will take over everything. I've found it important to grow it in a seperate container so I'm not constantly battling it. If you want it in the ground, you can get a large container and bury it and plant the mint inside. Mint can choke out everything, the greedy thing. I would consider transplanting it or something if the eggplant and other veggies are important to you.

Transplanting or trying to get rid of mint can be difficult too as it will keep trying to crop up. So if you do try to move it, try to remove as many of the roots as possible from the ground and keep a close eye on the spot so you can keep pulling up the new shoots.
Reply:The mint family is a companion to the family that eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers are in, it's said to sweeten the fruit.

Mint is an aggressive plant and you will need to trim it back occationally to keep it from over shading or chokeing out your eggplant. (that's the olny inhibiting the mint might do)

What can you do with spearmint leaves?
When you brew tea soak them in there for a lil bit for some flavor. Or there are some dessert recipies that call for some. Also makes a good garnish. The natural oils in mints help aid in digestion. That's why they always give you mints after meals in restaurants.
Reply:put them in tea/iced tea or use them as garnish for desserts. You could also make mojitos!
Reply:I've heard that you can dice them up fine and sprinkle them in your doorway to keep out ants and mice. Supposedly they hate the smell.
Reply:Puree a few of them in a food processor with honeydew vanilla yogurt and a little honey to make a cold soup.
Reply:use them in tea, with some honey...
Reply:You could also chew on them, cheap breath freshener.

Where can I find spearmint tea?

I've looked in every grocery store, walmart and target around with no luck.

Where can I find spearmint tea?
Here are a few links to buy it online. And believe it or not, you can even buy it on Ebay! Also, locally, you can try a health food store. Every area has one of those!!
Reply:That's odd, Bigelow makes spearmint tea, although it may be a blend, so does Celestial Seasonings. There are so many brands with mint tea. All you need is some spearmint, which is very easy to grow from small plants. You can use the leaves fresh or dried.
Reply:Try azuregreen.com if there isn't a local GNC or herb shop (natural remedies). Although I prefer to grow and harvest it myself, I've never had problems finding spearmint tea in Walmart. Its usually camouflaged by the other teas or in a combo box of varieties of flavors.

When I can't find it at Wally World, I go to the local herb store and get it there if the need is immediate, otherwise I also use azuregreen.

Hope that helps

Is spearmint good to keep away spiders...? What about silverfishes?
I don't know about spearmint but moth balls do the trick lol have some one put them under your house and put one or 2 in each room. I have heard this works great my mother in law uses this method.
Reply:Silverfishes are the bane of all pest control companies. It takes a long time of continued treatments to really get rid of them. It took my husband (the Orkin man) close to a year to get his mom's house rid of the little pest. Good luck

I love Peppermint and hate Spearmint.
Reply:Yes- peppermint makes me feel nauseas (too strong for me) and I love spearmint. They taste completely different.

Oh, the reason why peppermint makes me feel nauseas is because when I was pregnant with my first baby it made me sick.

But spearmint is stronger and "colder."
Reply:Yes, I prefer Spearmint myself - Ppeppermint is a bit too overpowering at times.

One is Doublemint, the other Spearmint. Not their fault they taste the same.
Reply:Actually they don't taste the same. Doublemint tastes like peppermint and Spearmint tastes like spearmint...

What is the difference between Spearmint and Peppermint?

Peppermint (scientific name ''Mentha piperita L."), also called American mint, brandy mint, lamb mint, and lammint, is originally from Europe. It has leaves with serrated edges that are about 1 or 2 inches long and about twice as long as they are wide, sprouting from stems with a square cross-section.

Spearmint (scientific name ''Mentha spicata L."), also called mint, brown mint, garden mint, lamb mint, mackerel mint, Our Lady's mint, and sage of Bethlehem, is also native to Europe. It is similar in appearance to peppermint, but the leaves are usually stemless.

If you manage to see the plants in bloom, spearmint flowers form clusters that are narrower and more pointed than those of peppermint.

The two plants have distinct tastes, with spearmint's coming mainly from a compound called carvone, which is relatively light and sweet in flavor.

Peppermint owes most of its taste to another substance, menthol, which has a mild anesthetic and cooling effect, making it especially valuable in medicines. Peppermint oil can also be topically applied to help ease tension headaches, can be consumed to help ease altitude sickness, and can act as a decongestant.

Spearmint oil is of some use in repelling mosquitoes and is often used for its taste rather than for its medical properties, although it can reduce gastric gas.

Oils of both plants have a long history of medical use going back to Egypt and India 5,000 years ago.

It might amuse you to know that the word ''mint" comes from Greek mythology. The idea is that Hades, the god of the Underworld, got his wife, Persephone, upset by having an affair with a nymph named Minthe. For revenge, Persephone turned Minthe into a sweet herb.

Traditionally, mint leaves were placed around the dead at Greek burials as a reminder to Hades (and perhaps to help cover up nasty smells).
